WhatsApp, the widely used messaging app, is introducing an updated interface for Android users, mirroring the iOS app’s layout. The refresh, which started beta testing in September 2023, is now accessible to all Android users worldwide. This marks a significant update, aiming to enhance user experience with improved navigation and design elements.

What’s New in WhatsApp for Android?

The most noticeable change in the WhatsApp update is the relocation of the status bar to the bottom of the screen, a design cue taken from its iOS counterpart. Additionally, the app has expanded its tabs from three to four, now including Chats, Updates (merging Status and Channels), Communities, and Calls. This adjustment allows for more straightforward access to the app’s various functions.

WhatsApp's Controversial New Redesign Is Now Rolling Out to Android

WhatsApp announced the update on March 28, 2024, highlighting the move of navigation tools closer to the thumb’s reach, making the app more user-friendly. The redesign also introduces new, sleek icons for each tab, distinguished by a lighter green accent for notification counts. This new green hue aligns with the WhatsApp icon’s color, providing a cohesive look.

In light mode, users will find a clean interface with a white background and black icons, while dark mode reverses this color scheme. The message display on the main chat screen has also undergone changes. While Archived chats remain at the top, three new categories – All, Unread, and Groups – have been added below, facilitating an easier way to sort through messages.

If the update hasn’t appeared on your device yet, there’s no need for concern. WhatsApp is gradually rolling out the new interface to Android users globally, and it should reach everyone in the coming days.

I’ve seen pretty mixed reactions to this redesign so far, but being a beta user, I’m used to the changes, and honestly, I really appreciate this redesign.
